What is EMDR?

A proven approach for healing from trauma and emotional distress

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. Rather than focusing only on talking through events, EMDR works directly with how memories are stored in the brain – helping to reduce the emotional charge of painful experiences and promote lasting relief.

During EMDR, you’ll recall specific memories while engaging in gentle, guided bilateral stimulation – such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This process helps the brain “reprocess” the memory, shifting it from a state of emotional distress to one of resolution and understanding. Over time, the memory loses its intensity, allowing you to think about it without feeling overwhelmed.

EMDR is widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments for trauma-related symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. Research has also shown its benefits for depression, grief, and a variety of other emotional challenges. Many clients describe EMDR as helping them finally feel unstuck – able to move forward with a greater sense of calm, confidence, and balance.
